Sheffield Crown Court heard on April 21 how Duane Walmsley, 29, of no fixed abode, attacked a fellow inmate twice at Doncaster prison and racially insulted him.
Beverly Wright, prosecuting, said the complainant was in the exercise yard and there had been some verbal abuse between the complainant and another person before Walmsley attacked the complainant on June 8, 2018.

Walmsley was also heard by a prison officer racially abusing the complainant, according to Mrs Wright.
Mrs Wright said the complainant suffered further racist verbal abuse through the night from the defendant and two others.
Judge Graham Reeds QC told Walmsley: “You came up behind him and punched him without warning in the exercise yard and I am sure that the evidence demonstrates the motivation for that attack was racist.

The complainant was attacked a second time on June 16, 2018, when Walmsley was briefly released from his cell to use an ATM but as his door opened he went after the complainant again.
Mrs Wright said the complainant was at a snooker table taking a shot when Walmsley swung one blow which left him unconscious.
The complainant suffered a fractured jaw and needed to have two plates fitted.

Walmsley pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated assault and to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm after the attacks at HMP Doncaster.
The defendant, who has previous convictions and is currently serving an indefinite custodial sentence, claimed he was suffering with anxiety and the complainant had been racially abusing him.
Judge Reeds sentenced Walmsley to two-years of custody and stressed his sentence is indeterminate and he will only be released when it can be determined it is safe to do so.
