Doncaster Minster to receive £32,300 funding from the government to recover from Covid

Nearly £400 million has been awarded to thousands of cultural organisations across the country including Doncaster Minster in the latest round of support from the Culture Recovery Fund, the Culture Secretary has announced.

Doncaster Minster is the most prominent building in the town of Doncaster and can be seen for miles around from every direction. The building and site are repositories of local history and tell the religious, cultural, social and human history of the area.

Pre-Covid it welcomed nearly 20,000 visitors a year, from this country and across the world, who come to see the magnificent architecture, wonderful stained glass and the amazing Schulze organ.

A spokesman said: “Prior to Covid we were delighted to host a range of regular community events including the Community Choir, the Literacy project, the Good Companions who meet regularly for friendship and companionship, and the Dementia Café, all of which have had to take a break during this difficult time. The Minster is also an arts and culture venue, hosting charity concerts and exhibitions

throughout the year, all of which have been cancelled. We are delighted to receive this award so that we can improve our infrastructure to ensure that we are able to maintain an even safer environment for visitors and staff so they feel safe when they are in this wonderful building.

It will also enable us to begin to build up our visitor numbersagain that have ceased during the three Covid lockdowns, through marketing and promotion that otherwise would not have been possible without this funding.£
